The Kailua Intermediate School Band exists to help students develop responsibility, compassion, teamwork, and respect.  Through daily lessons, full band rehearsals, student-led activities, and concerts in the school and community, students cultivate these attributes.

First-year students enroll in the Beginning Band course, where they learn to read music and go through an instrument selection process.  They are then taught the basics of playing their instrument and perform for 3 concerts throughout the school year: the Winter Concert (December), Beginning Parade of Bands (May), and Aloha Concert (May).  Instruments are loaned to students at no charge. Rehearsals are held twice a week either before or after school, starting in November.  Beginning Band students who demonstrate exceptional attitude, behavior, and performance on their instruments are invited to join the Advanced Band in January and go on the band trip for an accelerated learning experience.

Second-year students enroll in the Advanced Band course with the band teacher's permission.  This class is designed to help students to strengthen the fundamentals on their instruments and to expose them to more complex musical concepts.  Students in this class rehearse twice a week after school starting in August.  Advanced Band students perform at many concert events throughout the year including: the Elementary School Concerts, Winter Concert, Joint Concert with high schools, Windward Mall, Advanced Parade of Bands, and Aloha Concert.  For a full listing, please click on the "Calendar" link above.  Advanced Band students who demonstrate exceptional attitude, behavior, and performance on their instruments are invited to go on the band trip and select a secondary instrument to learn in January.

Parents of band students are encouraged to join the Booster to help with fundraisers and student events.  All monies from fundraisers are used to subsidize the cost of instrument repair, instrument purchases, student activities, transportation for concerts, consumable student supplies, and trips.  Booster meetings are held once a month to plan for these activities.
